Quilombo de Praia, Matias Cardoso - Minas Gerais, Brazil, 2015

He swims like a fish and apparently sees underwater too.
On one of our visits to Quilombo de Praia, I went to the river with the children. I dived in the  São Francisco and didnt’ want to leave. I enthusiastically forgot that I was wearing my prescription glasses. Amidst dives, I suddenly wasn’t seeing so well. The glasses didn't come up with me, they stayed underwater. I slightly despaired: how could I keep photographing while seeing so poorly? I explained the situation to the children and we all went groping, diving and looking for the glasses. I confess that, for my part, it was more about having some fun than having any hope of finding them. Pablo was well committed. He went up and down quickly until he showed up with my glasses in hand. I was impressed: the water was cloudy and stirred that day and the sunlight was low. Laughing with my surprise, Pablo said he knew how to swim like this because he ate 500 - he repeated: 500! - live mullets when younger.
All the children nodded in agreement.
