Quilombo da Lapinha, Matias Cardoso - Minas Gerais, Brazil, 2017

When I was at Quilombo da Lapinha, back in 2017, Orotides Maria dos Santos was already one of their eldest residents. Today she's alive and well with 101 years old. Full of the wisdom accumulated from her century of life, Orotides worked as a midwife and proudly noted that she had never lost a single child or mother during labour. When she was asked how many children she had delivered, she just brushed it off: “I don’t know, kid. A bunch!”.
