Água Boa II community, Rio Pardo de Minas - Minas Gerais, Brazil, 2018

Mr. Leordino is Olíria’s father and Deca’s father-in-law. They were the couple who welcomed and guided us through Água Boa II. We were invited to a family lunch at Leordino’s and his wife’s home this day. At his backyard there was a big jabuticaba tree, under which their grandchildren and their great grandchildren were playing and eating jabuticabas. When we asked Leordino how many great grandchildren he had, he brushed it off with a laughter “I really don’t know anymore. But they’re a bunch, right? A bunch”.

This picture was taken as Mr. Leordino told us about when he used to walk all the way to cities like Mato Verde (about 60 km or 37 miles from Rio Pardo de Minas) and Monte Azul (almost 80 km or 50 miles away) to sell his produce.

“We used to leave wednesday, keep travelling on thursday and arrive at Monte Azul by friday. We used to travel for nearly the whole day and night. And when we got back, we gave some rest to the horses and farmed a bit.”

“That’s some history, huh?”, I sighed, pretty impressed. “Yeah, some history”, Leordino noded with a half-smile.
