Água Boa II, Rio Pardo de Minas - Minas Gerais, Brazil, 2018

Spirituality is a major aspect of day-to-day life in Água Boa II. The small chapel in the community holds masses, religious festivities and is a common venue for socialization amongst the residents. It’s really beautiful seeing how they use their faith as a tool to enhance their courage and strenghten their struggles for justice and human rights, especially in face of the huge challenges they face. And when the night comes and the only lights shining are from the stars, the chapel stands there, as a bastion of faith that drives the community.
In Catholicism, the red light that's kept lit inside churches represents the presence of Christ and the fire of love and solidarity. The geraizeiros from Água Boa II take this to heart everyday in their relationships with their community and the Cerrado.
