Água Boa II, Rio Pardo de Minas - Minas Gerais, Brazil 2018

Mr. Antônio is a geraizeiro farmer and amateur photographer. When we visited Água Boa II, him and his wife, Ms. Geralda, welcomed us at their home. With his digital camera, Antônio documents his communities’ struggles, festivities and day-to-day life. He holds a precious archive that contains the recent history of Água Boa II and all they have been through in their 11 years struggle to create the Nascentes Geraizeiras Reserve. Antônio, along with Deca, guided us through the reserve, introduced us to the native vegetation and to the Cerrado’s landscape.

Mr. Antônio is a sweet and kind man, but also strong and fierce. He has great pride in being a geraizeiro. He was part of the courageous group of villagers who opposed the regional elites tied to eucalyptus monoculture and charcoal production. These geraizeiros were threatened, surveilled and intimidated, but they stood their ground and never backed down. They protected their land, their home, their water and our environment.
