Água Boa II, Rio Pardo de Minas - Minas Gerais, Brazil, 2018

The Cereus azureus, Cereus aethiops or blue mandacaru-de-facho is one of the cacti species we came across in Sobrado community’s territory. It has a deep blue color, different from anything I’ve ever seen in nature and can reach up to 10 meters (around 33 feet) long. In 2018, Sobrado was one of the 15 communities awarded for their work in defense of biodiversity and water springs. Sobrado in particular was also recognized for their contribution to the approval of a city law that ensures the identity and land rights to traditional communities of Rio Pardo de Minas.
