Quilombo da Lapinha, Matias Cardoso - Minas Gerais, Brazil, 2017

Izabel de Souza Mota and Passim ride at Quilombo da Lapinha. Earlier, we interviewed Izabel at her house. Here are some highlights from the interview:
- When I first moved here, my kids were against it. They said: “Mom, that place is no good, you’ll end up in a shack there, it’ll never amount to anything”. And I responded: “No. I’ll stay with my people. I’ll fight with them”. Because I’m bold, I’m stubborn, I’m a fighter in these community affairs, I enjoy the struggle.
What we need the most here is to improve this land, to make an artesian well for us. We suffer too much with the water situation, the São Franisco River is dying, it’s dry, it really needs to be cleaned up, it’s too dirty. What we have to do right now is to demand help from the government.

I really like in here, I like the quilombola people. I think I could only leave here in a coffin.
